Gursky is known for his large-scale, digitally manipulated photographs that often depict urban or industrial landscapes. "Rhein II" is a striking example of his style, with its abstract composition and muted colors. The photograph was taken in 1999 and was digitally manipulated to remove all traces of human activity from the landscape, resulting in a surreal and otherworldly image.

The sale of "Rhein II" broke the previous record for the most expensive photograph ever sold, which was held by Cindy Sherman's "Untitled #96" at $3.9 million.
