LOST
This work explores loneliness and isolation using the metaphor of vending machines.
Defined as a subjective experience of social isolation, loneliness is becoming a major public health concern in the 21st century, affecting all ages and cultures globally.
In my work, solitary figures and vending machines are placed in remote landscapes and streetscapes, illustrating detachment from or avoidance of human interaction. These vending machines, offering mundane items, symbolize a semblance of normalcy and connectivity amidst solitude. Positioned in desolate settings, they become beacons of accessibility, linking to everyday life. Inspired by Gregory Crewdson's staged photography, I carefully select landscapes to support my concept, with some elements created using Artificial Intelligence. This juxtaposition invites contemplation on themes of isolation, consumerism, and the human need for connection, challenging perceptions of space, utility, and modern existence.
